Don Williamson was a colorful and controversial figure in Flint politics.

In 2002, after former mayor Woodrow Stanley had been recalled, Williamson won the mayor’s seat.

Under Don Williamson, the city’s budget deficit swelled, sending Flint’s finances into a downward spiral.   Williamson abruptly resigned in 2009, just weeks before he was to face a recall election.    Years later, Flint was placed under state oversight for its inability to eliminate its budget deficit.

Flint Mayor Karen Weaver has ordered flags at city hall to fly at half-staff.

Don Williamson was 85.
