As part of human trafficking awareness month, Michigan State Police motor carrier officers are joining a multi-state initiative this week to educate motorists

Michigan is joining Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois to raise awareness and educate people on human trafficking.

Human trafficking is when a person is illegally transported to be bought or sold for forced labor or commercial sex.

The initiative also partners with Truckers Against Trafficking, a nonprofit organization that educates commercial truck and bus drivers across the country on human trafficking.

The program plans to educate public transportation companies, rest area attendants, and truck stop employees on the signs of human trafficking.

One Michigan State Police spokesperson said these educated individuals will be “the eyes and ears of Michigan highways.”

The program starts Monday and is scheduled to run until Friday.
