United Auto Workers suing General Motors

The United Auto Workers is suing General Motors in federal court for allegedly breaching its labor contract.

The UAW says its contract with GM gives employees with seniority the right to transfer to jobs at other plants, when they are laid off from their own plant.  The union says many of the 690 workers who have been laid off at the Lordstown, Ohio Assembly plant have applied to work at the Fort Wayne, Indiana Assembly plant. But GM is circumventing the deal, the union claims, by using temporary workers to block the transfers. GM says it's transferring 50 Lordstown workers to Fort Wayne, but has no further comment on the lawsuit.
