The city of Flint is close to getting back a major water customer it lost during the city’s water crisis.

General Motors took its engine plant off Flint water in 2014, after noticing the city water was corroding engine parts.

But as the city’s water quality has improved, the automaker has been in talks with city officials to hook back up with city water.

Hughey Newsome is Flint’s Chief Financial Officer.  He says GM would represent a little less than five percent of Flint’s entire water system billing:

“That’s a big chunk of change for one customer.”

Newsome says the city and GM still have to agree on how to credit the automaker for $1.2 million in overbilling.

Getting GM back on Flint water will help the city’s beleaguered water fund avoid slipping into the red.

City officials hope to reach an agreement soon.
