Michigan school districts have begun offering school lunches to students stuck at home during the coronavirus outbreak.

In some cases, they’re being home-delivered

Last week the Michigan Department of Education announced it had been granted a federal waiver to provide school lunches to all students during unanticipated closures.

The waiver lifted the requirement that lunches be provided in a group setting.

Steve Scoville is the Farwell School Superintendent. He said for the next three weeks the school district will deliver meals along bus routes on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

“Tuesday we’ll have breakfast and lunch for Tuesday and Wednesday and then Thursday we’ll do again and it’ll depend how much we can get in that we can get in that delivery Tuesday and Thursday.”

Scoville said families can opt out of the deliveries if they choose. Families can also come pick up food.

“We’re also offering meal pick up on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3-6PM. We’re asking for one family member per family to pick up for all of the family member’s 18 and under.”

More than 60 percent of students participate in Michgian’s free and reduced lunch program - suggesting that many children rely on the program to eat.
