Republicans and Democrats in Michigan’s congressional delegation say there are some critical environmental issues that affect the Great Lakes. They say solving those are not partisan issues.

Senator Debbie Stabenow says Michigan’s congressional delegation is trying to keep money in the defense budget to enhance barriers to keep Asian carp out of the Great Lakes.

“How do we address the fish that are coming up the Mississippi and the Illinois rivers with the biggest threat at this point of going into Lake Michigan.”

Stabenow says the government will likely have to use to three or more types of technology to stop Asian carp from reaching the Great Lakes via canals in Illinois. Those waterways are managed by the Army Corps of Engineers.
