A Great Lakes Environmental Coalition is calling for Congress to increase funding for water infrastructure projects.

The group, Healing Our Waters, says Great Lakes states will need 179 billion dollars over the next twenty years in order to replace crumbling water infrastructure.

Jordan Lubetkin is with the group. He said crumbling water infrastructure has become a crisis for many states.

“In Michigan what that amounts to is a 15 billion dollar backlog of needed repairs and upgrades over the next 20 years and federal investment has been woefully inadequate.”

Lubetkin said crumbling infrastructure will impact people’s health - as it already has with algal blooms in Toledo, Ohio, and with lead pipes in Flint, Michigan.
