Memorial Day weekend has Michigan campsites going fast, with just a few sites left in the lower peninsula.

DNR officials said state parks are nearly 89 percent full, just one percent lower than numbers last year.

They said weather plays a role in Memorial weekend booking, and with favorable weather, sites filled up quick.

Jason Fleming is Chief of the Resource Protection and Promotion section for the parks and recreation division of the DNR.

“There’s many opportunities in the upper peninsula to continue to camp, so even where we may be a little more booked below the bridge there are still a lot of great places out there in the upper peninsula and a lot of great opportunities for people to reserve some of our more traditional places.”

Fleming said cooler temperatures and more rustic campsites, without running water or electricity, contribute to lower demand in the U.P..
