The state is taking public comment on updated cybersecurity rules for electric companies.

State energy officials said there are reports of criminals targeting U.S. energy facilities, so up to date cybersecurity is of utmost importance.

The electric grid today is more computerized than years past. That gives hackers more access points. Utilities say they want to stay ahead of the game.

Nick Assendelft is the spokesperson for the Michigan Public Service Commission.

“One thing that we’ve seen from media reports on cybersecurity, whether it’s related to energy systems or any other type of business, criminals are always going to try to find a different way to get what they want so it’s good to be proactive and to make sure you have a robust process in place so that you can try to stay ahead of them.”

Assendelft said the public comment period is open through the end of the business day May 29

A public hearing is scheduled May 8 in Lansing.
