Governor Rick Snyder says he will roll out a plan this coming fall to boost recycling in the state.

Michigan’s statewide residential recycling rate of 15 percent is among the lowest in the country. Snyder says getting more people to recycle will be a top priority that will include unilateral actions he can take as governor and asking the Legislature to adopt new laws.

“We need to do better in recycling. That is an area where I wanted to see more improvement, and we haven’t kept up the pace that we have in many other areas.”

Snyder says too many Michigan communities still don’t have curbside recycling.

“We still don’t have curbside recycling for a lot of our folks. They would love to recycle, but if they don’t have it as an alternative then it becomes much more cumbersome.”

The governor will work off recommendations sent to him by two task forces. He says whatever strategy he comes up with will include plans to pay for it.
