As Baby Boomers retire, more careers in law enforcement are becoming available. And that's leading the Michigan State Police to increase its efforts to recruit new troopers.

The State Police islooking to recruit candidates for a class early next year.

Ashley Simpson is the Community Service Trooper at the Alpena Post. She said as older troopers retire, finding replacements that want to work in rural communities is a challenge.

“We’re looking for people who want to take ownership of the career as a state trooper who want to have the pride to work in a specific community area," Simpson said. "Northern areas aren’t necessarily getting as many troops as the southern regions. So, we’re looking for people who want to work in the rural areas as opposed to the large cities”.

Simpson said the state will host a Question and Answer session on May 25th at the Alpena state police post, from 4:00pm - 6:00pm. She said those interested in becoming a trooper are invited to attend and have their questions answered.
