A sacred Michigan site was vandalized earlier this year, and now authorities are asking for the public's help in identifying the vandals..
Officials say Sanilac County’s petroglyphs were defaced over the winter, when images were carved into them.
The petroglyphs are historic cultural pieces that date back multiple generations.
Erik Rodriguez is the interim public relations director for the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe.The petroglyphs are part of the tribe’s history.
“The Petroglyphs being the significant piece that they are, interpreting some of our history, is something that came to a shock to all of us here. As the DNR went and they help us protect this site they noticed that there was these carvings into the stone.”
Rodriguez said it doesn’t appear that the vandalism was an attack on the tribal culture, but was rather “a senseless act”.
“So for us it’s something that’s really culturally significant to us because there’s pictures, stories and basically teachings that were passed down from our ancestors many generations ago.”
Rodriguez says the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe and the DNR are asking for help from residents in order to identify the vandals.
