For the first time since 2019, more than 2000 athletes will return to Central Michigan University this week to compete in the state summer games.

“This is our largest event of the year,” Special Olympics Michigan marketing and communications manager Lourin Sprenger said. “It’s something that we all look forward to. It’s a chance for us to celebrate coming together.”

The event is three days long starting on May 31st and ending on June 2nd.

Last year the games had limited attendance due to safety concerns surrounding the pandemic.

“Our athletes are largely immunocompromised population so safety of course for our athletes’ volunteers and coaches has been the number one priority, but this year we’re back to full speed,” Sprenger said.

Due to the increase in participation coming back this year, the organization is in search of more volunteers.

“We have had a smaller showing for summer games during the pandemic and for safety guidelines over the past few years,” Sprenger said. “So not as many volunteers have been needed, so this year we are looking to reenergize our volunteer support and welcome new members.”

The summer games are one of six competitions in Michigan held throughout the year. This year’s state summer games will mark the event’s 54th year.

There are around 1100 volunteers throughout the three-day event.

“The more the merrier so people are invited to come out to spectate, to be fans,” Sprenger said. “If they would like to be put to work, we are always looking for more volunteers.”
