The Washtenaw County Health Department has issued a stay in place order for University of Michigan students due to a big spike in COVID-19 cases.

Students must remain in their residences for the next two weeks unless they’re going to class or out for food or other basic needs. Susan Ringler Cerniglia is with the Washtenaw County Health Department.

She says 61% of the more than 600 confirmed or probable cases of COVID 19 in the past week have involved U OF M students, and her department was losing the ability to do contact tracing.

“Social events and activities are really where we’re seeing transmission,” said Cerniglia.

About 80% of classes were already being taught online only, and the University is upping that to 90 percent in the wake of the order.
