State trooper hit by fleeing man

MSP

A driver fleeing from police hit and injured a Michigan State Police sergeant last night on the Mackinac Bridge.

Officials said a 47-year-old Harbor Springs man led Northern Michigan police on a high speed chase and manhunt last night. The suspect was arrested this morning at his condominium.

Public Information Officer for the Michigan State Police Lt. Derek Carol said the St. Ignace Post trooper caught up to the suspect at the bridge toll booth.

“The sergeant positioned his vehicle so the guy couldn’t get through, walked up to the driver side and ordered the driver to turn the vehicle off," he said. "He could smell alcohol coming from the vehicle also. The driver refused and the sergeant reached inside to attempt to turn the vehicle off. At that time the driver put it in reverse dragging the sergeant.”

The suspect then busted through the tool booth and fled south on I-75.

Carol said the suspect was on the run for close to nine hours.

The trooper that was hit by the suspect was transported to McLaren Northern Michigan and was treated for non-life threatening injuries. He has been discharged from the hospital.

The MSP were assisted by the Mackinaw City Police Department, Emmet County Sheriff's Office, Petoskey Department of Public Safety, Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians Police Department, Boyne City Police Department and Charlevoix County Sheriff's Office.
