The Thanksgiving tradition is filled with food, family, and  black Friday sales. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is having their own sale with free entrance fees into state parks.

Throughout the year, state parks require vehicles to purchase a recreation passport or day pass to enter. Officials said as part of a black Friday tradition, the entrance fee is waived for all state parks and state owned land.

Officials said each year the program grows and more families across Michigan join in on the holiday tradition.

DNR Spokesperson, Maia Turek, said “As we get into a season of giving thanks, it is a great opportunity to give thanks for time with each other and for our public lands that we are able to explore.”

Turek said the freebie day is an opportunity to explore a new state park and create new memories.

“Last year, I actually heard a bald eagle. I’ve never heard a bald eagle before. And it was just an absolutely unforgettable experience that I was able to share with my family,” Turek said.

In the interest of transparency, we note the DNR is a financial supporter of WCMU.
