Special Olympics Michigan to open world's largest Special Olympics facility

Special Olympics Michigan

Special Olympics Michigan has purchased a former high school campus near Grand Rapids to build what will become the world’s largest Special Olympics training facility.

The new Special Olympics Michigan Unified Sports and Inclusion Center will be located at the site of the former South Christian High School campus in Byron Township.

At nearly 130,000 square feet, officials said it will be the largest center of its kind in the world.

Aaron Mills is with Special Olympics Michigan. He said the center will be a game-changer for Special Olympics athletes on the west side of the state.

“It’s going to be a hub for sports, health, wellness, inclusion..kind of bringing together people from all across West Michigan and Michigan as a whole. And for our athletes, it gives them a chance to really have a place that they can call home’.”

Mills said he expects the center to open after 2020. He said the Special Olympics State Summer Games and the organization headquarters will remain in Mount Pleasant, while the Winter Games will continue to be held in Traverse City.
