The Soo Locks closed for the winter on Tuesday and are expected to undergo several million dollars in repairs.

The locks are shut down every year between January 1st and March 25th

Kevin Sprague is with the Army Corps of Engineers out of Sault Sainte Marie.

“We’ve been really fortunate to get the facility funding to go through and rehab the facilities so the Poe Lock will keep operating for the next 50 years.”

Sprague said the work should also keep the locks in good condition until the new Soo Lock is complete.

He said he’s not sure when, exactly, construction for the new lock is slated to begin.
