Meijer announced this week it’s limiting the use of reusable bags in their stores and other grocery stores may follow suit.

MIchigan Retailers Association Spokesperson, Amy Drumm, said some stores are making the move to protect their workers and mitigate the spread of coronavirus.

“Reusable bags can harbor bacteria and viruses for several hours, up to several days, There is concern that cashiers and baggers are handling those reusable bags customers bring in, it could be transferred to them and throughout the store.”

Drumm said people who continue to shop at locations that allow reusable bags should take extra care to wash their bags after every use. She said this will ensure safety for both the customer and workers.
