A petition drive that seeks to amend the state civil rights law to add anti-discrimination protection for LGBTQ people has turned in around 483 thousand signatures.

Trevor Thomas co-chairs the petition drive effort, says “we are asking to be treated like everybody else.”

Thomas also says discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity is a fact of life in Michigan and needs to stop.

If election officials certify that roughly 70 percent of the submitted signatures are valid, the legislature has 40 days to decide whether to pass the citizen's bill.

Otherwise the proposal will go to the voters on the 20-22 ballot.
