Opening Day 2019: What to expect

Get out your hunter’s orange. Tomorrow is opening day of this year’s firearm deer hunting season.

For many Michiganders, November Fifteenth is usually spent in the woods rather than the office or classroom. This year's Opening Day comes on the heels of record-cold temperatures.

Still, Michigan hunters are a hardy bunch. Cold weather probably won’t keep them inside.

Chad Stewart is the Deer Management Specialist with the Michigan DNR. He said the cold has eased and the weather should bring advantages for hunters.

“With the projected weather forecast being fairly mild weather, in terms of low 30’s, light wind..plus we’ve got the added benefit of having snow on the ground throughout much of Michigan, which certainly increases visibility of deer, I really am expecting quite a lot of participation.”

Stewart said sales of hunting licenses this year are down by about four and a half percent compared to last year. He said that number is consistent with the state’s overall year-to-year decline in hunting.
