State Attorney General Dana Nessel has joined a lawsuit opposing President Donald Trump’s national emergency declaration.
Last week Trump declared a national emergency at the southern border in order to build the wall he’s been calling for since the 2016 campaign.
Michigan joins 15 other states asking a court to stop Trump from constructing a border wall without the approval of Congress and prevent Trump from using federal money for construction of a border wall.
“I’m very concerned that this money for this manufactured emergency is going to divert funds that can be utilized for our safety and protection here in the state of Michigan,” said Nessel.
But some Republicans, like Senator Peter Lucido (R-Shelby Township), say Nessel should not interfere.
“At the end of the day don’t we have enough problems in this state to take care of without her monkeying into the federal system?” he said.
Nessel said Michigan does have an interest and, “I think it’s important that we use the office of Michigan Attorney General to stand up for our citizens here in the state of Michigan and to make certain that the executive is not improperly absconding with funds that belong to our state.”
