The Michigan State Police says it supports the recommendation of health experts to avoid family holiday gatherings.

The department says it is expecting to see lighter traffic due to COVID-19 health guidelines.  However, State Police spokesperson Lieutenant Michael Shaw says troopers will still carry out their usual holiday patrols.

“Because you know we have to face some facts.  There’s going to be some people that just are not going to go by the recommendations and then they’re also going to not obey speed limits or they’re going to take that chance and get behind the wheel impaired.”

Shaw says state troopers are in the midst of an impaired driving crackdown.  He says that focus will run through the New Year’s holiday.
