Michigan ranks 12th in social distancing

Data collected shows that Michigan was the twelfth best state in social distancing.

Public cell phone data shows that Michiganders interactions were at about 56 percent lower than 2019. The data shows that people interacted with close to 5.5 people during 2019 and this year, interactions dropped to 2.4 people.

Director of Client Strategies at TopData Sean Lansing said the data shows a correlation between the number of interactions and positive cases.

“As time has gone on and reopenings have gone from phase 3, to phase 4 to phase 5, interactions really spiked and they kind of leveled out over July and August,” he said. “But they are certainly much higher than they were in March or April and you will see that corresponding rise in case load with that increase of interaction.”

The data shows that California had the biggest decrease with a close to 88 percent decrease in interactions. South Dakota had the smallest decrease at about 13 percent.

California residents still have double the interactions compared to South Dakota residents, but Pre-COVID California residents interacted with close to 13.5 people, and now, just over three people.
