Lawmakers want congressional funding for PFA research

Michigan lawmakers sent a letter to the appropriations committee last Friday asking for money to study the health impacts of PFA’s.

PFA’s are chemicals that have been linked to thyroid disease and some cancers.

The compound has been found across the state, including at Camp Grayling and the former Wurtsmith Air Force Base near Oscoda.

US Congressman Dan Kildee joined Senators Debbie Stabenow and Gary Peters in requesting funding for a study.

“We’re just hoping that enough members of Congress, particularly those involved in writing the initial draft of the appropriations bill, will include this money in the budget. We’re going to push hard and hope this comes through.”

Kildee said the study would cost seven million dollars.

“We know that it’s a dangerous compound, we know that it can have health impacts. What we don’t know is how significant those health impacts have been due to the exposures that have taken place on these military bases.”

He said it’s important to understand what responsibility the US Government has to support the recovery of people exposed to PFA’s.
