Lake Superior Chippewa tribe suing Enbridge

A tribe in northern Wisconsin is suing Enbridge Energy to try to force the company to shut down Line 5.

The tribe says the pipeline threatens a fragile and crucial watershed.

[The lawsuit was filed by the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa.  Dylan Jennings is a tribal council member.

[you know obviously a rupture, a break in the line, a leak in the line, could be absolutely catastrophic to our people, our resources and everything that we depend upon.]

The lawsuit says Enbridge's easements expired in 2013, but Enbridge says almost all its easements are perpetual ones on private land, or don't expire until 2043.

Michigan is also suing to try to force Enbridge to decommission the pipeline, which also runs under the straits of Mackinac.

Tribes near the Straits have also called for a shutdown.
