Indigenous demonstrators march in front of federal courthouse in Detroit demanding justice

Demonstrators marched in front of the federal courthouse in Detroit Tuesday, they were demanding justice for an indigenous woman who was murdered.

About two hundred people chanted and held signs asking for a murder indictment of the woman accused of killing Nangonhs-Ba Massey, a citizen of the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians.

Carrie Heron is a friend of Massey and her family. She explains the situation and why the protest is taking place in Detroit.

“Kaden Gilbert, she is, well, she is white. And because she killed a Native American on the reservation, she's supposed to serve federal time. It's a federal crime.”

Massey was killed in November. It’s rare to go this long without an indictment.  More crime lab DNA reports…which both prosecutors and the defense have to review…are the cause of the latest delay. Meanwhile… a family grieves and seeks justice. Miengun Pamp is Massey’s Dad.

“She was she was a shining star. And she was just starting to really blossom.”

A recent report shows homicide was the third leading cause of death for indigenous women aged 10 to 24. Massey was just 21 when she died.
