As deer hunting season continues, officials are asking hunters to share their harvest with people in their community.

For nearly 30 years, the nonprofit Michigan Sportsmen Against Hunger (MSAH) has been connecting hunters, processors, and food banks together to bring fresh meat to the local community.

MSAH Executive Director, Dean Hall, said by giving back, hunters can help people make ends meet.

“There is a phenomenal number of people that seek food assistance and have to make a decision between paying their house or rent payment, paying utilities,  paying for medical supplies that they need, or paying for food,” he said.

Hall said last year the organization provided more than 200,000 meals across nearly 90 food banks, pantries, and shelters in the state.

“Last year we had over 52,000 pounds of ground venison that was distributed. One pound will serve four people.”

He said 2018’s numbers were great, but he wants to see Michigan hunters do even better this year.
