A ski jump in the Upper Peninsula is in line to host an international competition in 2021.
At a press conference at the U.S. National Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame in Marquette today (Wed) Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced a 3-million-dollar grant for the Pine Mountain ski jump in Iron Mountain. The facility is one of the largest artificial ski jumps in the world.
Whitmer says the event will be critical to the region’s economy
“In 2017 visitors to our state spent more than $1.2 billion in the Upper Peninsula alone. This ski jump will help attract even more visitors and solidify the UP as a year-round travel destination.” :17
Pine Mountain hasn’t hosted a World Cup since 2001.
The money comes through the Great Lakes Sports Commission. The agency is tasked with supporting and promoting sports in the U.P. and Northern Lower Michigan.
