Democrats in Lansing say they’re hoping to get a hearing on bills to regulate firearms before the end of the year.

The bills were introduced back in February. There are House and Senate versions – and so far neither chamber has given the bills a committee hearing. They would allow spouses, family members, and others to petition a court to remove a person’s firearms if they think the person is a danger to himself or others.

Democratic Senator Rosemary Bayer is a bill sponsor.

She says just getting a committee hearing would be a great first step.

“We have a lot of problems with gun violence and it’s time for us to start moving forward”

A spokeswoman for Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey says he is willing to consider the so called red flag bills – but he has not decided on a specific date yet.
