Detroit Census Challenge

Detroit’s Census count is being challenged by local officials because they claim the federal government hindered the effort.

Mayor Mike Duggan says in his city… the count started late, ended early and was understaffed throughout. He says that was not an accident.

“There appears to be a national strategy to undercount cities and it appears to be hitting Detroit most effectively.”

Duggan says the city has two months to build a case, which could result in an administrative appeal or a lawsuit. Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib says canvassing efforts were stymied.

“We need that direct human contact. Where we can actually go door to door and talk to those that did not respond in the first place.”

Tlaib sits on the House Oversight Committee. She says she will use that position to request evidence from the Trump administration regarding Detroit’s Census count.
