Communities Celebrate First National Holiday of Juneteenth

School may be out, but education continues as Central Michigan communities gear up to honor Juneteenth tomorrow.

Dr. Nikita Murry is the Director of Diversity Education at Central Michigan University.

She said spent the week of Juneteenth educating others.

“Ensalved people in Texas didn’t know they were free until June 19th 1865, which is why its referred to Juneteenth. And can you imagine it’s almost like being released from prison and no one telling you were released from prison?”

Dr. Murry said Juneteenth is an opportunity to embrace, remember, and educate one another on America’s history.
