Cheboygan woman contributes hundreds of masks to national network

Cheboygan resident, Sharen Lange is contributing to the national effort of providing face masks for people in need.

Lange said she's a part of a Facebook network of seamstresses called Sew You Care.

The group takes requests, then once made, face masks are sent to people in need including medical workers, military bases and immunocompromised individuals.

Lange said she dusted off her sewing kit to make over 800 face masks for people during the last month.

"If you’re a normal citizen, this gives you some level of security and comfort in coverage, but if you’re a healthcare professional, they’re designed to fit over an N95 over top of that traditional rectangular clinical mask and provide you an opportunity to extend the use of your medical equipment," Lange said.

She said her husband helps in the production process as well. Lange said sometimes, community members drop off materials at her doorstep.

"The minute we’re caught up on what we see as immediate Michigan needs, then we start filling requests through a national sewing network and we send them out throughout the United States," Lange said.

She said it's estimated that 600 of the total masks have gone to other states in need.
