Cadillac City Council votes to extend White Pine Trail

Prein & Newhof

The Cadillac City Council voted Tuesday to approve an extension to the northern end of the White Pine Trail.

The council’s plan will extend the 92-mile trail by about 1,000 feet.

David Heyboer, the chairman of Friends of the White Pine Trail, said the addition seems small in comparison to the total length of the path, but it will be a significant improvement to its northern terminus.

“The City of Cadillac has had a hole in the trail system there for a long time, and it’s great to see it finally getting addressed,” Heyboer said.

He said the gap in the trail has been a common source of confusion for visitors to the area:

“People that wanted to get on the trail, they’d come to Cadillac, and it was kind of vague as to where the trail was. I’ve had a lot of complaints over the many years: ‘What’s going on in Cadillac?’”

The city’s plans call for the trail to end at a parking lot at the intersection of South Lake and West Chapin streets in Cadillac, instead of ending as it does now, “pretty suddenly, not really with any explanation,” said Heyboer.

“Cadillac has a great tourist thing going on,” he said. “This can only help with that.”
