Attorney General Dana Nessel joined a coalition of 15 state attorneys general on Wednesday to urge the outgoing Trump Administrationto follow the Presidential Records Act.
States are responding to reports that the Trump administration has used private email servers and, in some cases, even torn up documents that needed to be preserved.
Ryan Jarvi is a spokesperson for the state attorney general.
“It’s a piece of history,” he said. “I think it would help the incoming administration to be able to review these things, see what’s happened, and stay up to date on events and things like that.”
In a written statement Attorney General Dana Nessel said “sufficient record keeping is imperative to ensure that the incoming administration is aware of the current administration’s actions.”
“They have this obligation under the law and they should comply with it,” Jarvi said. “If anything it’s a piece of history. If any laws were broken - that’s to be determined at a later point.”
He declined to comment on whether documents might be used in the future to prosecute the outgoing administration.
