Challengers are lining up to take on US Representative Justin Amash for the Republican nomination for Michigan’s 3rd Congressional District seat.
This comes, in part, after Amash posted on Twitter that President Donald Trump has, “engaged in impeachable conduct” among other tweets critical of the president.
Joel Freeman, chair of the Kent County Republican Party, said there’s a lot of passion in the party on both sides – for Amash and for Trump.
“There has been certainly a divide between those two individuals for a number of years,” Freeman said. “And this I think really just kind of drew a darker line in the sand.”
Freeman also said that while Amash has been a vocal opponent of Trump in the past, this time could be different.
“This district has elected President Trump and has elected Congressman Amash five times. So time will tell,” Freeman said.
Republican state Representative Jim Lower formally announced Monday that he will take on Amash for the Republican spot on the 2020 ticket. Tom Norton, a former village trustee and veteran who served in Afghanistan, announced a month ago that he’ll also challenge Amash.
