New bill allowing Legislature to intervene in court proceedings passes Senate

The Michigan Legislature could soon intervene in court proceedings against laws it previously passed. That’s usually the role of the state Attorney General.

A bill passed in the Senate Thursday on partisan lines. Democrats offered up amendments that were quickly shot down.

Republicans say the bill is about giving the Legislature a stronger voice to represent the people that elected them.

But Democratic Senator Steve Bieda says he’s not buying it.

“The goal of this bill is simple. This is an intentional effort to undermine the role of the attorney general’s office.”

The bill needs one final procedural vote before it heads to Governor Rick Snyder’s desk.
