Governor announces Flint to resume local control

After roughly seven years of state oversight, Flint will resume local control.

Governor Rick Snyder announced Wednesday that the city will no longer be in receivership.

Flint has been under state control since 2011 when a Financial Review Team concluded the city was in a financial emergency. An emergency manager was assigned to the city from 2011 through April of 2015.

Since then the city has been overseen by a Receivership Transition Advisory Board meant to move the city towards independent control.

In January the board voted to give more control back to local officials but maintained control of city finances.

Once Wednesday’s order is signed by the State Treasurer the board will be dissolved and all remaining emergency orders will be lifted.

State treasurer Nick Khori said in a written statement he plans to sign the resolution and “give the city of Flint a fresh start.”
