Brett joined WCMU in February, 2021, as a general assignment reporter. He was previously the health reporter at WXXI Public Broadcasting in Rochester, N.Y., and has filed stories for National Public Radio, IEEE Spectrum, The Village Voice and other outlets.

Brett earned a master’s degree in journalism from the Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at the City University of New York. He grew up on Washington state’s Kitsap Peninsula and is proud that his cell phone number still carries the 360 area code.

As early as 2016, an internship supervisor at Central Michigan University heard a report of inappropriate behavior by the owner of a Lansing firm where CMU had an internship program and which employed recent CMU graduates, according to the woman who made that initial report.

Central Michigan University has hired Matthew Schneider, a former U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan, to investigate university employees’ knowledge of sexual harassment allegations against the CEO of a Lansing consulting firm that employed CMU interns and recent graduates.

Health officials in Northern Michigan say school-age children -- previously thought of as a low-risk group -- are increasingly spreading the novel coronavirus as cases of COVID-19 as Michigan becomes a national hotspot for the disease. 

But both school superintendents and health department leaders say there’s very little evidence of coronavirus transmission inside classrooms. The virus is spreading through extracurricular contact, they said.
