Juke Joint: August 19, 2018

This week at "The Juke Joint" Robert Barclay, the Duke of Juke, offered a tribute to Aretha Franklin, the Queen of Soul. He played a selection of her work along with music by her mentors and friends including Sam Cooke, Dinah Washington, Clara Ward, Ray Charles, Mahalia Jackson and James Cleveland. In the coming weeks and months he will continue to salute Aretha by spinning four tunes each program from throughout her career. Robert also previewed the Blues by the Bay Festival in East Tawas, Michigan and the Marquette Blues Festival in Marquette, Michigan.

Robert Barclay launched "The Juke Joint" broadcast on WCMU in April 1985. It has been a Sunday night fixture from 8:00-11:00 pm ever since. A devoted listener dubbed him the "Duke of Juke." He includes nearly a century's worth of blues history on his program including traditional and contemporary blues along with boogie woogie, soul music, rhythm & blues, zydeco and gospel music.
