Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer addresses the state during a speech Thursday in Lansing. Thirteen members of two militia groups face criminal charges after allegedly plotting to kidnap Whitmer.

The US Attorney for Southeast Michigan has filed an illegal weapons charge against a Huron County man in a case that involves threats made against Governor Gretchen Whitmer.

The FBI charging affidavit alleges 30-year-old Randall Robert Berka (BER-kuh) the Second made the threats in rambling videos posted to YouTube. The threats mentioned Whitmer, other Democratic politicians, law enforcement and LGBTQ people. Berka is charged with unlawful possession of a firearm because he had earlier been involuntarily committed for mental health treatment and used marijuana regularly. The affidavit says Berka possessed four guns as well as body armor. The FBI was alerted to the YouTube videos by an online tip.

Efforts to reach Berka’s family or his attorney were not successful.
