CMU dedicates Native American mural on Indigenous Peoples Day

A new Native American mural was dedicated Monday at Central Michigan University. The event coincided with Indigenous People’s Day.

The mural is intended to increase indigenous representation and education on campus.

Ari Harris, Director of Communications for Central Michigan University said the mural represents the past, present and future goals of indigenous people.

“I think that this mural reminds people that this is a part of our history, that this is a part of The makeup of our institution, and one that we're very proud of. “

The mural features information about the tribal nations, and includes digital resources that guide people to do more research on their own.

Harris says the idea for the mural came from a desire on CMU’s campus to honor their partnership with Saginaw Chippewa Indian tribe.

Jill Harrington is a senior at CMU majoring in journalism and minoring in theatre and interpretation. Jill grew up in Novi, Michigan and started reporting for WCMU in summer 2022.
