Full Senate prepares to discuss budget bills

The full Michigan Senate could begin debating its budget proposal for the next fiscal year as soon as next week.

That’s one of the last steps before the negotiations over the Senate’s plan expand to the House of Representatives and governor’s office.

"I think that we’ve demonstrated that we’re able to work together and have those discussions with the last budget and or the supplementals. So, I think we’re in a good spot to continue to move forward in a positive way." said Jim Stamas, the Republican Senator who chairs the Appropriations Committee. He says he believes there’s more common ground than there are differences with the Whitmer administration.

The House is also on track to begin debating its full budget proposal soon.

Lawmakers are aiming to finish negotiations and pass a budget by midsummer.
