Recent infection numbers are down in Michigan, but COVID-19 pandemic is still ongoing

WCMU Public Radio

While the most-recent infection numbers are down in the state, the COVID-19 pandemic is still ongoing.

A highly transmissible variant has been sweeping through Europe and that’s generally been an indicator of an impending rise in cases in the U.S.

Michigan’s Chief Medical Executive Doctor Natasha Bagdasarian says people should enjoy these weeks of low infection rates, because it could change.

“It's not so much of a Will we see another surge it's more a matter of when will the next surge be and we really need to start thinking that way that this is a relatively safer time but there are going to be some bumps ahead of us.”

Bagdasarian says it’s possible there will be a need to, again, make masking recommendations. She says getting the initial two round dose of vaccine, and then a booster shot, is the best way to prevent serious infection.
