Police Chief James White

Detroit has selected its new police chief and it’s the same person who’s led the department for the past three months.

James White became interim police chief following the departure of James Craig earlier this year. As interim chief, White increased patrols downtown and stepped-up surveillance of drag racing and drifting. He says that kind of policing is influencing the summer’s crime trend.

“We’re experiencing a 20% overall crime reduction.” Mayor Mike Duggan appointed White to the position. He says White represents the future of the Detroit Police Department.

“He stepped in the COVID crisis a year and a half ago and the department didn’t miss a beat.”

Detroit City Council has 30 days to reject White’s appointment. Otherwise, he’ll become the city’s 43rd police chief.
