Detroit is beginning work on a 27-mile bike and pedestrian trail. The loop is named after a homegrown boxing champion.

The Joe Louis Greenway is expected to weave through many of Detroit’s neighborhoods. Sandra Pickens sat on the advisory council and lives near the project.

“We’re long overdue, all of us over here. It’s going to be beautiful.”

Joyce Louis Barrow is the late-boxer’s daughter. She says she hopes the greenway will empower future generations.

“It will give them a reminder that there is a champion in all of us.”

The first phase of the Joe Louis Greenway is starting at the former Conrail railway line and will go from Warren Avenue to Fullerton.

The project is expected to take 10 years to complete.
