Michigan is seeing highest new COVID-19 infections

WCMU Public Radio

Over the past two weeks, Michigan has seen the highest number of new Coronavirus infections by population in the U.S.

Adam Lauring is an Associate Professor at the University of Michigan Medical School.

Speaking on WDET’s Detroit Today, he says getting this latest surge in cases under control calls for a multi-faceted approach.

“So we need to be better at contact tracing, we need to be better at wearing masks and physical distancing. And we need to be better at vaccinating because the bar gets higher as the virus is better at transmitting.”

Health officials have blamed the dramatic rise in new infections on high school sports and fatigue in continuing safe practices like wearing masks.

Tuesday, the state health department announced nearly five thousand new cases of COVID-19.
