Next year, Michigan voters will be voting for governor. One poll released this week indicates a close race.

Lansing-based EPIC-MRA recently conducted a statewide poll surveying 600 registered Michigan voters with half of them reached by cell phone.

Looking forward to the 2022 general election, the question: If the election for Governor were held today and the candidates were Candice Miller and Gretchen Whitmer, would you vote for Candice Miller the Republican or Gretchen Whitmer the Democrat?

Forty-six percent said they’d vote for Whitmer, 45-percent Miller. A one-point advantage for the incumbent. That’s with voters “leaning” toward Miller. Remove them from the equation and Epic-MRA president and pollster Bernie Porn says Whitmer has an early four-point advantage. Taken together, the race currently is too close to call. The poll has a four-point margin for error.

When voters were asked if they have a favorable or unfavorable opinion of the candidates, Whitmer received 49-percent favorable, 44-percent unfavorable. Republican Candice Miller received 34-percent favorable and 12-percent unfavorable.

When it came to name recognition, everyone polled was familiar with the governor, 34-percent did not recognize the name Candice Miller.

Of the 600 voters surveyed, 45-percent consider themselves Democrats, 41-percent Republicans.
