Coalition pushes state to move up vaccine eligibility for those with disabilities

Activists are asking the state to consider moving Michiganders with disabilities from group 1C to 1B on the COVID-19 vaccine priority list.

In a letter to the governor, the Michigan Disability Rights Coalition notes that the World Health Organization says people with disabilities are among the most vulnerable populations in the pandemic.

Laura Hall is a program manager for the Coalition.

She says the vaccine is necessary to prevent more harm for those with disabilities.

"I know they’re expecting to get to category 1C by May, but that is also a really broad group," said Hall. "So in the meantime, you know, I think we’re looking at more sickness and more death."

Hall says the state also needs to improve its data collection to better understand how the pandemic has hurt people with disabilities.
