Detroit public schools to suspend in-person learning

Detroit’s public schools will stop all in-person learning until January. The district made the decision in response to a rise in coronavirus cases in the city.

Superintendent Nikolai Vitti says the district committed to following the most cautious advice of health experts in its reopening plan.

"So we took the more conservative number of 5% because the disproportionate impact that COVID had on the Detroit community and knowing that our families would be even more sensitive and frightened legitimately about COVID," said Vitti.

Vitti says the closure is not based on cases in the schools.

By following health protocols, Vitti says the district was able to successfully keep around 10-thousand students safe since reopening in September.
